OBJECTIVE:

In 2026, the Atchafalaya Trace Commission (ATC) celebrates the 20th anniversary of national designation of the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area (ANHA). To commemorate this milestone, the Atchafalaya Wild Grant Program has been established to award grants to eligible applicants seeking funding for projects that promote the conservation and/or appreciation of the natural resources of the ANHA. Funds may also be awarded to outdoor recreation projects that provide and/or promote access to the ANHA’s unique natural environment.

ELIGIBLE PROJECTS:

To be eligible for grant funding, the applicant’s proposed project must fall into either one or both of the following categories:

Land, Water & Environmental Conservation and/or Interpretation Projects

  • Projects that conserve (prevent wasteful use of a natural resource) and/or interpret the ANHA’s unique natural resources
  • Examples of eligible projects include environmental surveys, condition assessments, plans (e.g., land use planning, climate adaptation plans, resilience planning, landscape planning), educational speaker series, interpretive exhibits, etc.

Outdoor Recreation Development Projects

  • Projects that introduce new outdoor recreational resources or enhance existing outdoor recreational resources and/or provide information on use of and access to recreational resources within the ANHA
  • Examples of eligible projects include feasibility studies, plans (e.g., recreation resource plans), engineering, permitting, trail development, map/brochure development, or park enhancement projects (e.g., parking, signage, trail heads, lighting, or trail designation projects).
